Food and drink on the agenda

Almost 50 businesses attended an event held at Hamilton Racecourse on 21 October, learning about how to maximise the region’s food and drink offerings and other local opportunities, including the Lanarkshire Business Excellence Awards.

This special meeting of the Lanarkshire Tourism Association (LTA) was open to all tourism and hospitality businesses across North and South Lanarkshire and offered attendees the opportunity to find out about the advantages of joining the LTA.

Local restaurateur, Ajmal Mushtaq inspired event attendees with insights into his own award-winning restaurant Mushtaqs Indian Restaurant in Hamilton, and their commitment to using quality local produce and suppliers.

Scotland Food & Drink’s Fiona Richmond highlighted the value of telling the stories behind the food and drink served to customers, while VisitScotland’s Quality and Tourism Advisor, Benito Gundin shared insights into VisitScotland’s Taste our Best food accreditation scheme and how it can benefit your business.

Launched for The Year of Food and Drink Scotland 2015, Taste Our Best was developed as a direct response to evidence of consumer demand. Research has highlighted that sampling traditional dishes and local produce is one of the top activities undertaken by visitors to Scotland; 49% of people want to try local food and 21% of their holiday budget will be spent on eating and drinking.

Having a Taste Our Best award demonstrates you are providing quality ingredients of Scottish provenance and the freshest seasonal produce. Taste Our Best establishments source food locally, appreciate and understand where their food has come from and highlight at least 40% of Scottish produce on the menu.

Visitors will pay up to 15% more for food of Scottish origin, and businesses promoting Scottish produce typically enjoy up to 20% higher sales. So winning Taste Our Best accreditation not only helps businesses to attract more customers but also to improve their bottom line.
