Going for gold

Both the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Festival 2014 struck gold at the Central South West Scottish Thistle Awards regional finals, which took place on Wednesday 4 November at Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel.

The annual competition celebrates excellence, innovation and success within the local tourism industry.

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games won the title of J. Thomson Colour Printers Ltd. Best Sporting Event. Similarly, there was also success for Festival 2014. The city-wide cultural events programme organised by Glasgow City Council for the Commonwealth Games was named the winner of the Caledonian MacBrayne Best Cultural Event or Festival.

It was not only Glasgow’s event industry which had cause for celebration, Scottish Thistle Awards were given to a number of leading local restaurants, cafes and bars. Ox & Finch claimed the Best Restaurant Experience Award and for the second year running, House for An Art Lover was named the Best Informal Eating Experience.

The George Bar in Hamilton was also praised for the central role it plays in local community life as it picked up the Friendliest Pub / Bar Award.

Leading city restaurateur and Chair of service initiative Glasgow Welcomes, James Rusk, was named Braehead Foods Hospitality Hero and Arnold Clark Car and Van Rental won the Edinburgh Airport Tourism is Everyone's Business Award.

As regional winners, these businesses will now go on to fly the flag for Greater Glasgow & The Clyde Valley and the wider Central South West region at the glittering national finals of the Scottish Thistle Awards at Edinburgh’s EICC in March next year during the 2016 Scottish Tourism Week Signature Programme.
