A Sustainable Future for Scottish Tourism
Scotland’s Sustainable Tourism Partnership is leading efforts to make Scotland a more sustainable tourism destination. The Partnership has commissioned Dunira Strategy and the Scottish Institute of Sustainable Technology to work out how Scotland is doing and how we compare against our competitors.
To find out how sustainability can best be measured, Dunira will be working with a wide range of stakeholders across the industry and public sector to determine an appropriate set of indicators. These will then be used to assess Scotland’s performance against its vision of being ‘Europe’s most sustainable destination’ and identify areas in which Scotland needs to raise its game. The consultants are currently conducting a review of systems being used in other countries, which will provide a benchmarking framework.
Commented VisitScotland’s Sustainable Tourism Manager Sandy Dear: “This is not just about low energy light bulbs and recycling, but whether, for example, there are appropriate training and transport links to ensure that Scottish tourism businesses remain competitive and profitable in the long term.”
Said Dunira’s managing director Benjamin Carey: “The exciting thing about this project is that it isn’t simply an academic study, but will help everyone involved in Scottish tourism to determine clear priorities, especially during these challenging economic times.”
In VisitScotland’s next eUpdate, there will be details of how you can contribute to this study by proposing performance indicators that matter to you.
The study, funded by SNH and VisitScotland, will be completed by Easter 2009.
